That elusive melon taste
I’d given up eating watermelon because the seedless variety was dominating what was on offer at my local supermarkets and taste-wise, the flavour had practically disappeared. Also colour wise, I always thought it was a shame to eliminate the black seeds from the watermelon and cynically replace them with these softer, anaemic seeds. However, recently I came across a piece of watermelon at an organic shop where it was great to see the vivid pink hues juxtaposed against its black seeds and it was wonderful to get reacquainted with the original divine taste. Maybe because it was organic and biodynamic, there were layers to the flavour that I hadn’t experienced before.
According to Tao principals, hardness and black have Yang attributes which contribute to attracting the Yin qualities of sweetness. On reflection, I understood that removing the black seeds had taken the flavour with them. This turned out to be an act of pure marketing madness — lets remove the inconvenience of these pesky black seeds and sacrifice the taste in the process.
To celebrate my rediscovery with the taste sensation of the watermelon, this post celebrates watermelon pink and other pink hues and their combinations with black.
