Sophia Clay Art — Sophia SoHyun Kim, Vancouver
“I have discovered that the inspirations of working with clay, developing the textures of reliefs and using cut outs to be energizing. Throwing clay on the potter’s wheel, in particular, can be addictive as it is quiet and personal; it is like a meditation for me as I have to center myself before I can center the clay. Art in all mediums has a power of transformation but for me clay has a unique capability. I have explored many different facets of clay while studying at the Emily Carr University.
The textures on my ceramic wares are inspired by bark and trees are my obsession these days. My fascination with tree barks started while taking pictures of the textures of oaks, birches, pine trees and aspens in the Pacific Northwest. I have been mesmerized that they all seem to have scars on their barks that express their identity and journey. My ceramics are washed in a matte white slip over rich red clay, then etched, marked and scarred to reflect the burnished texture of birch bark with a rustic nature focus. I find the presence of trees to be soothing and comforting and this influences my ceramic art.”

“My professional career has primarily followed a pathway in biological disciplines. I spent many years as a biologist studying small bird and waterfowl populations. Throughout this period, however, I was always involved in artistic endeavours that were informed by bird and habitat observations across western Canadian rural and wilderness landscapes. The opportunity to observe these lands from both the air and ground allowed me to develop an appreciation for the juxtaposition of different habitats and land forms as well as their textures and colours throughout the seasons.”
“While the biologist in me may have been focusing on the science of the landscapes, the artist side of me was focusing on the beautiful abstract nature of the natural environment. For many years, I have drawn on this reserve of images to develop both representational and abstract works, primarily in stained glass and photography. During the last few years, I have broadened my artistic pursuits to include clay sculpture and pit-firing techniques. Pit firing represents an intriguing exploration of probabilities. The application of various materials and fire create organic patterns across a ceramic landscape. It is always exciting to uncover a piece from the ashes and to see if the firing has produced the anticipated effects.”
